The rapid expansion of e-commerce has fundamentally transformed consumer shopping behavior in India, driven by increased internet penetration, smartphone adoption, and the availability of secure digital payment systems. This study examines consumer preferences in the digital age, with a specific focus on how demographic factors and key determinants such as convenience, price, trust, product variety, delivery efficiency, payment security, and social influence shape e-commerce purchase decisions. Using an applied research approach, the study combines a systematic review of literature with an empirical survey of 400 consumers selected through stratified random sampling. Primary data were collected using structured questionnaires and analyzed through percentage and frequency analysis. The findings reveal that younger consumers (18–35 years) show a strong preference for mobile-first platforms, discounts, fast delivery, and digital wallets, while older consumers place greater emphasis on trust, security, and reliability. Discounts and promotional offers emerged as the most influential factor across all age groups, followed by delivery speed, product variety, and peer reviews. The growing dominance of UPI and digital wallets reflects increasing consumer confidence in digital payment ecosystems. The study concludes that e-commerce platforms must adopt consumer-centric strategies integrating personalization, secure payments, efficient logistics, and social proof to enhance satisfaction and sustain long-term competitiveness in the digital marketplace.
